The international initiative to propose four beams scanning of Additive Manufacturing

Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) is co-founded by the Ministry of Education, Hubei Provincial Government and Wuhan Municipal Government. It is one of the first five national laboratories to be approved and sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology in November 2003.The laboratory is managed by Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) The feasibility plan for its construction was approved by Ministry of Science and Technology in November 2006.

WNLO has fixed assets of nearly ¥ 500 million as well as instruments and equipment worth more than ¥ 200 million. It is also home to a great number of talents, including 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering (who also work with other institutes and organizations), 2 chief scientists of the National Basic Research Program of China (also known as the 973 Program), 14 Cheung Kong Scholars (including 8 distinguished scholars and 5 chaired scholars) appointed by MoE, 7 winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars.

WNLO is an important part of China’s scientific and technological innovation and is a core scientific research institution of “Wuhan Ÿ Optics Valley of China”.

WNLO aspires to become a base for the innovation of optoelectronic science and technology, where high-level, multi-disciplinary and innovative talents are trained in optoelectronics, and a place where international exchange and cooperation of in optoelectronics takes place. WNLO’s responsibility and mission include serving national economy, leading the industrial development trend in the fields of optics and photonics by developing frontier science and interdisciplinary research.

    Chief designer of Techgine, Doctor of Engineering, deputy director of laser and terahertz technology functional laboratory of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO.Professor Zeng is the executive member of CMES Additive Manufacturing Technical Council and China Surface Engineering Council, and the council member of Laser Institute of America.As a leading scholar in laser AMT field, professor Zeng and his team has made a series of important achievements in the laser AM theory, process and equipment. Around 70 of his inventions are patented, nearly 50% of which have already been applied in practical projects. In recent years, the team has won a national second prize for progress in science and technology, as well as a first and a second prize at the provincial and ministerial level successively.

    Technical director of Shanghai Techgine, Doctor of Engineering, professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.Main research fields: selective laser melting technology, laser direct forming technology and laser synthesis of new material.Professor Wang has hosted and participated in over 20 projects, including the National Key Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Project, National Science Foundation of China Project, National “863”Program, Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University, R&D projects of businesses and the military. He published more than 40 papers, gained 13 patents, and 12 utility models patents, and won two provincial first prizes for progress in science and technology.

  • Lixiangyou

    Technical expert and leader of software development and planning of Shanghai Techgine. Doctor of engineering. Professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.Main research fields: laser AMS integration and software development, LIBS technology, laser AM technology and laser micro-/nano-fabrication technology.Professor Li has headed and participated in over 20 projects, including the National Key Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Project NSFC, National “863” Program, National Defense Program and horizontal projects from the domestic large and medium-size enterprises. He has won the national second prize for progress in science and technology, 2 technology prizes at the provincial and ministerial level. In addition, he published over 50 papers, gained more than 20patents for invention and more than 10 utility model patents.

    Zhuhaihong

    Technical expert and leader of printing material and process of Shanghai Techgine. Doctor of Engineering. Professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and party branch secretary of laser and terahertz functional laboratory.Main research fields: laser AM technology theory and applied material research.Professor Zhu has headed and completed many projects, including NSFC and several horizontal projects of national defense and civil defense. She was one of the principal members to participate in and complete the National 973 Program and National 863 Program. Currently she is hosting1 military defense 973 program, 1 NSFC, 1 key foundation of Hubei Province and 1 key foundation of university.

The selective laser melting (SLM) technology is about using the heat of laser beam to melt metal powder, then allowing it to cool and reform. Its fundamental principle is laminated object manufacturing. That is, the cross-section shape of a workpiece is formed in the X-Y plane and thickness is achieved from displacement at the Z-coordinate to finally form the three-dimensional workpiece.

The SLM forming uses metal powder which is completely melted under high-energy laser and later cooled to form a three-dimensional object, layer by layer. The difference between SLM and SLS is that during the SLS forming, the powder is under the semisolid liquid-phase sintering, while the powder is completely melted during the SLM forming to significantly improve the forming precision and mechanical property.

Large dimension, industrial grade, light weight and high strength are the future of SLM technology and an indicator of metal 3D printing industry.
